Justin's Lip Repair Surgery

December 17, 1996 (11 wks. old)

These three pictures were taken the morning of Justin's lip repair surgery in the pre-op room. They are the only ones we have of Justin smiling before his lip repair.

One day after surgery

Justin #11.

He's starting to swell up and bruise a bit. He was still pretty groggy. It seemed like everything we fed him came back up, too. We were still giving him Tylenol w/Codeine, but discontinued it for regular Tylenol this morning after calling the hospital for advice. As soon as it was out of his system, he was much more alert and he stopped vomiting, too.

Two days post-op

Justin #12 Justin #13The first attempts at smiling! It's just a little smile, but we knew we were on the road to recovery now. He was a lot more bruised and swollen today, but obviously felt much better.

On the third day of post-op...

Justin #14

...we took Justin Christmas shopping. Everything was going fine until Debbi bumped his face against her shoulder after changing his diaper. Then Rick was trying to calm everyone down, and did the same thing! We decided to go home. We felt like scum of the earth carrying a screaming infant in arm restraints half way across the mall to our car. It's wonder we didn't get arrested! This picture was taken while Daddy & Justin were relaxing together to recover from the traumatic event.

Day 4

Justin #15 Justin #16

Justin's swelling and bruising were practically gone by now. We did, however, have a new problem--the little Houdini was becoming quite an expert at getting out of his arm restraints at night. One solution we found was putting them on under his pajamas. Even when he managed to get his arms out of the restraints, they were still trapped inside the PJ's.

Day 9

Justin #18 Justin #17

The doctor took the stitch thru Justin's nostril out today, the rest of the stitches will dissolve on their own. All that's left to do is keep him in arm restraints (or under direct supervision without them) for another week. Looks pretty good, doesn't he?
